Four arrested after police officer shot in Nottingham city centre

— 2 mins read

A 27-year-old woman is being questioned on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent after an officer was shot on Angel Row early on Sunday.

Four people have been arrested after a police officer was shot in Nottingham city centre in the early hours of Sunday morning. The officer had approached two people at a bus stop on Angel Row shortly before 4.50am on 18 October when he was shot in the foot. Both people left the scene, and officers later recovered a firearm.

The officer was taken to hospital, where he remains in a stable condition, with specially trained officers supporting him and his family. Angel Row was closed while officers examined the scene, and there was a heavy police presence across the city centre throughout Sunday.

The first arrests came that evening, when officers stopped a vehicle in Radford and detained the three people inside. A 27-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, while a 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. A fourth person, a 30-year-old man, was arrested in Bedfordshire in the early hours of Monday, also on suspicion of assisting an offender. All four remain in custody and are being questioned.

Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas, of Nottinghamshire Police, described the shooting as “a shocking incident and a sobering reminder of the potential dangers faced by officers”, and said her thoughts were with the officer, his family and his colleagues. She later called it “a deeply shocking incident that unfolded in front of members of the public”. She thanked the people who helped the officer before paramedics arrived, and asked that his privacy be respected while he recovers.

Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas described the shooting as “a shocking incident and a sobering reminder of the potential dangers faced by officers”.

The Police Federation of England and Wales said the shooting was “a stark reminder of the dangers police officers face every day while protecting the public”, adding that “their courage and commitment must never be taken for granted”. Nadia Whittome, the Labour MP for Nottingham East, said she hoped the officer would make “a full and speedy recovery”.

The cordon on Angel Row has since been lifted. Officers will stay in the city centre to reassure the public, and the force says there is nothing to suggest a wider threat. Detectives are working to establish what happened before, during and after the shooting.
