Harry Says He Wants to Reconcile, and Hints That Some Do Not
— 2 mins read
The Duke of Sussex says reconciliation matters more than anything else. A single line in the same interview suggests he doesn’t expect it soon.
Prince Harry has said he wants to make peace with his family. In an interview with GQ, recorded in New York in late September and released today, he said that “the most important thing is to reconcile”, given everything else going on in the world.
The sentence that will be remembered came just before it. “Some people don’t want it to work out,” he said. “Of course I do.”
He named no one, and a Sussex spokesperson said the remark was “absolutely not intended as a swipe” at his brother or anyone else in the family. It will be read that way regardless. Harry and the Prince of Wales are understood not to be on speaking terms, and the interview came out on the same day the King, the Queen, William and Catherine hosted the Sultan of Oman’s state visit at Windsor.
The rest of what he said was more conciliatory. “Scars stick around forever,” he said, but what matters is your mindset and whether you are willing to let go. He said there is “enough drama in the world” without carrying on family quarrels. When he was asked whether he grieves the relationships he has lost, he said: “Yes, of course.”
When he was asked whether he grieves the relationships he has lost, he said: “Yes, of course.”
His circumstances have changed this year. The Sussexes moved back to Britain in late August, and Archie and Lilibet are now at school here. Last week the couple made their first joint public engagements since the move, visiting three charities in Nottingham, where they first appeared together as an engaged couple in 2017.
The Palace has set out the terms. In September, a letter sent on the King’s behalf by the Lord Chamberlain said the couple’s position was “akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests”. The Sussexes said they were surprised by it.
So the Sussexes are back in the country but have no royal role. Harry has said publicly what he wants. Whether the rest of the family wants the same thing, his own words suggest he isn’t sure.
